The German government started 2025 with new European policy initiatives and strengthened ambitions. The key challenges for 2026 remain clear.
Security and defence within the EU must be strengthened and Ukraine must continue to receive effective support. At the same time, negotiations on the multiannual financial framework must lay the foundations for the EU's global competitiveness, particularly through investment in new technologies and climate protection. The prospective enlargement of the EU and the protection of democracy and the rule of law also require the will to implement political reforms that will ensure the EU's ability to act in the future.
In view of these challenges, what role can Germany play in the EU and how is this perceived in Brussels and by the member states? How can institutional cooperation be shaped under changed majorities? What priorities and initiatives does Germany want to set in 2026?
We will discuss these and other questions with Germany's representative to the EU, Ambassador Thomas Ossowski.
