One year after the publication of the Draghi report on European competitiveness, we discuss measures to strengthen the EU economy and Germany's role with Dr Thomas Steffen, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

This event is in the past.

‘Our growth model is losing ground, weaknesses are increasing, and there is no clear path to finance the necessary investments.’ With these urgent words, Mario Draghi, former Italian Prime Minister and President of the European Central Bank, describes the future of the European economy.

About a year after the publication of his report on European competitiveness, some of his ideas have been taken up by EU institutions, for example in the Competitiveness Compass and the Clean Industrial Deal. At the same time, major challenges remain: dependencies, structural barriers and a slow pace of implementation make it difficult for Europe to keep up with global competition from the US, China and other countries.

What can the new German government do to help put the European economy back on track for growth? What measures are Berlin and Brussels taking to break down internal European barriers and withstand external pressure? And how important are future technologies, capital markets and new international partnerships for European competitiveness?

We would like to discuss these and other questions with you and Dr Thomas Steffen, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, at the IEP Europe Talk.
