The expectation of many European Member States for stronger German leadership has been revitalised by the early federal elections. The designated Chancellor is assuming government responsibility at a time of profound changes that will shape the structures of the EU in the long term. In view of the geopolitical challenges, the demands for the new German government are high.
In the latest issue of Berlin Perspectives, Julian Plottka analyses possible future developments in German European policy. He points out how German parties' European policy positions have evolved over time and discusses possible options for the new German government. He concludes that only a more supranational approach can meet the current challenges. Collaboration between the likely conservative German Chancellor, the mostly conservative European Commission, as well as cooperation formats like the Weimar Triangle will be decisive for the future of European integration.
