PPC – German Pre-Presidency Conference

IEP

Academics, political and civil society representatives, and young adults agree that in times of crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the European Union must take a stand for its values while striving for cohesion and justice.

In nine panel and roundtable discussions under the heading "Shaping the Future of Europe," academics and political and civil society representatives discussed key issues with regard to the upcoming German EU Council Presidency. Even though the German Presidency 2020 had to focus on the COVID-19 crisis in line with its motto "Together for the Reconstruction of Europe", this was by far not the only challenge. The focus remained on climate protection, digitization, strengthening social cohesion and the rule of law, continuing negotiations on the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), the EU's future relations with the United Kingdom, EU asylum and migration policy, and the EU's role in the world. Accordingly, the discussion topics of the virtual PPC also ranged from the differentiated future of the EU after Brexit to possible reform proposals in times of crisis management.

“With #EU2020DE a few days away, the virtual "German Pre-Presidency Conference – Shaping the Future of Europe” #PPCBerlin by @IEP_Berlin and @tepsaeu offers an important opportunity for high-level experts to discuss the agenda of the #Presidency! Join on http://german-ppc-2020.eu”, Andreas Peschke on the PPC, 25 June 2020

The Institute for European Politics organized the PPC and the associated annual meeting of the Academic Advisory Board together with the Trans European Policy Studies Association (TEPSA). In order to be able to discuss the agenda of the Council Presidency and its priorities also with experts from other European countries and to achieve a broader coverage, the conference was held in English. During the conference, the "TEPSA Recommendations" for the German EU Presidency and "youth ideas" from the #EngagEUrCouncil project provided an important framework for the numerous discussions.

The next Scientific Annual Conference of the IEP will take place in fall 2021.
