In two weeks' time, on 5 November, the presidential election will take place in the USA. The result of this election is also of far-reaching importance for Europe, as it will have a significant impact on transatlantic relations. While Kamala Harris, as the incumbent Vice President and Democratic candidate, stands for multilateral cooperation and continuity with Biden's EU-friendly course, a Trump victory would put the EU to the test. The Republican former president is known for his nationalist ‘America First’ policy, protectionist trade measures, scepticism towards NATO and international climate agreements as well as his less confrontational stance towards authoritarian states such as Russia. Such a policy would lead to renewed tensions, put a strain on the transatlantic economic partnership and force the EU to take a stronger international stance.
