Following the EU elections, the Parliament elected its committee chairs at the end of July. While the right-wing nationalist "European Conservatives and Reformists" received a number of posts, far-right groups were left empty-handed. Find out more in the EUle video!

At the end of July, the EU Parliament elected its committee chairs and their deputies. The composition of the committees reflects the diversity and complexity of the European political landscape. A clear political demarcation against far-right political groups became apparent. Although the right-wing nationalist ‘European Conservatives and Reformers’ were able to win some top positions, the far-right groups were unable to occupy any influential positions despite their efforts. This supports the stability and pro-European orientation of the parliament.

  • German MEPs lead 7 out of 20 committees, including the Defence Committee (Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, Renew Europe ) and the Budget Committee (Niclas Herbst, EPP).
  • Aurore Lalucq (FR, S&D) heads the Economic Affairs Committee and is in favour of an EU-wide wealth tax.
  • Johan Van Overtveldt (BE, ECR) remains Chairman of the Committee on Budgets and focuses on digitalisation and research.
  • The far-right political groups ‘Patriots for Europe’ and ‘Europe of Sovereign Nations’ were unable to fill a committee chair or deputy chair position.
