On 16 July 2024, the newly elected European Parliament convenes for its first session in Strasbourg. With 720 MEPs, new political groups are forming, particularly on the right-wing fringe. EUle sheds light on the formation of political groups in the EU Parliament 2024.

On 16 July 2024, the constituent session of the newly elected European Parliament will take place in Strasbourg. This session marks the start of a new legislative term and is characterised by major political upheavals. Who sits where? The 720 Members of the new European Parliament are organised into political groups. The composition of these groups influences the majority and balance of power in Parliament. Following the European elections in June, the reorganisation process is complete for the time being. There have been new developments, particularly on the right-wing fringes of the Parliament:

  • The Patriots for Europe, was co-founded by Orban's Fidesz party and the Austrian FPÖ.
  • The Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) was founded by the AfD and other right-wing conservative parties.
  • The ID Group is now consigned to history, while some of its former members have joined the new groups.

These developments show the dynamics and complexity of the political landscape in the European Parliament.
