#8 UkraineMEMO: Ukrainian Diaspora in Berlin

Making Ukrainian voices heard and establishing partnerships - that is the goal of numerous Ukrainian organisations in Berlin. In episode 8, we talk about the development of the Ukrainian diaspora, what makes it special and what role Ukrainians play in the German public sphere.

Since the start of the large-scale war of aggression against Ukraine on 24 February 2022, the Ukrainian diaspora has had an unprecedented presence in the German public sphere. Individual cultural, humanitarian and political organisations in Berlin joined together to form the Alliance of Ukrainian Organisations. They mobilise for demonstrations, create sustainable participation structures and network with German and international organisations.

The Revolution of Dignity and the beginning of Russian aggression in 2014 also marked a turning point for Ukrainians living in Germany. How has the Ukrainian diaspora in Berlin since then developed? Which challenges do Ukrainian initiatives face and what visions do they have for the future? How much space is given to Ukrainian voices and Ukrainian expertise in the German discourse?

These and other questions will be discussed with our guests:

Dr. Oleksandra Keudel is a political scientist and consultant for international organisations on good governance. Her research focuses on participatory democracy, anti-corruption initiatives and local governance in Ukraine.

Nataliya Pryhornytska is a political scientist, activist and co-founder of the Initiative for Knowledge Exchange, Empowerment and Culture (IWEK e.V.) and the Alliance of Ukrainian Organisations. She was a staff member of the German Bundestag, the think tank Zentrum Liberale Moderne and the European Academy Berlin.
