What are current challenges and possibilities for Belarusian diaspora communities? The public online event concludes the ConnectBY project. The basis for discussion are the research results of the project.

This event is in the past.

Wednesday, 07 December 2022 02:00 pm – Wednesday, 07 December 2022 03:30 pm Add to calendar

Following the prosecution by the regime in Belarus after the mass protests in 2020, many members of Belarusian civil society left the country. Since the Russian invasion to Ukraine in February 2022 and the collaboration of the Belarusian regime with Russia, their situation has become increasingly difficult.

Which challenges do Belarusian diaspora face at the moment? How connected are different Belarusian diaspora communities? What opportunities and solutions can civil society and policy makers offer them to ensure that the perspective for a democratic Belarus stays viable?

We invite you to discuss these and other questions during our public online event “Visions for a democratic Belarus - Challenges and opportunities of diaspora communities” on 7 December 2022, 2-3.30 pm (CET). Please register below.

Speakers:

  • Dr phil Olga Shparaga, European College of Liberal Arts in Belarus (ECLAB), Minsk
  • Florian Carmona, Desk Officer for Belarus, European Parliament
  • Anton Niadzelka, Chair of Razam e.V.

The project’s research results will be presented by:

  • Dr Vasil Navumau (ConnectBY, researcher)
  • Dr Olga Matveieva (ConnectBY, researcher)

Moderation: Laura Worsch, Institut für Europäische Politik, Berlin

The event will take place in English with interpretation to Belarusian.

The ConnectBY project is supported by the German Federal Foreign Office within its Civil Society Cooperation Programme for the countries of the Eastern Partnership and Russia.

About the ConnectBY – Belarusian civil society in diaspora project: After mass demonstrations in Belarus in 2020, numerous civil society actors had to leave the country. Many of them have settled in Germany and Ukraine. ConnectBY supports their networking and their work for a democratic Belarus.
