What is the current state of Moldova's EU integration process viewed from the local level? Which challenges does the country face in the accession negotiations, and what role does the EU referendum play in this process?

Recent opinion poll findings revealed that in majority Moldovan citizens are in favor of an EU membership. The upcoming EU referendum and presidential elections in Moldova on 20 October 2024 have strong implications for the country: A high voter turnout would validate the process of Moldova’s EU integration.

A significant role in Moldova’s EU accession falls to agricultural and rural development. Given that agriculture is vital to the country's economy, integration into the EU framework is critical for sustainable growth and food security. EU integration offers opportunities for modernisation, market access, and funding, which can enhance competitiveness and benefit rural communities.

A big obstacle for Moldova's EU integration efforts are current disinformation campaigns. Despite the potential benefits of EU membership and the general awareness of these advantages among the populace, narratives often portray EU accession negatively. These narratives resemble those faced by other Eastern European candidate countries, creating a challenging environment for pro-EU advocates. Common misconceptions include fears that joining the EU would threaten traditional values, harm the economy, or lead to a loss of sovereignty.

The first Local Dialogue of the CAPACITY4EU project took place on 19 September 2024 at the Regional Council in Stefan Voda, featuring speakers from various sectors. Attendees included representatives of civil societies, local public authority representatives, private sector members, and village mayors. Following this kickoff on the local level, the dialogue series will continue with an event in Falesti and Glodeni.
