Open dialogue and joint responses: these have been the goals of the German-Hungarian Forum since 1991. Academics and experts discuss current issues of social and economic development in both countries.

The German-Hungarian Forum is a platform for all social groups. As a bilateral discussion initiative, it promotes the exchange of ideas and experiences between representatives and experts from politics, business, culture, science and civil society in both countries. Objectivity and party-political balance are among the basic principles of the Forum's activities. Due to the great importance of the Forum for bilateral relations, the governments and especially the foreign ministries of both countries have promoted its work at the highest level from the very beginning. The aim of the Forum is to discuss current issues of social and economic development in both countries in an open dialogue and to find joint answers that also take into account the requirements of European integration.

The first German-Hungarian Forum took place in Budapest in June 1991 on the initiative of the European Movements in Hungary and Germany and under the auspices of the Institute for European Politics with the support of the then heads of government, József Antall and Helmut Kohl. Today it is one of the most important institutions in the social dialogue between Germany and Hungary.

The Forum is anchored in the bilateral partnership agreement between the two countries of February 1992:

"The contracting parties support the activities of the German-Hungarian Forum. They welcome its efforts to draft concepts for the further development of German-Hungarian relations and to take appropriate initiatives, involving all representative political and social forces in Germany and in Hungary."

The German-Hungarian Forum has since become an integral part of bilateral relations between the two countries.

President on the German side of the German-Hungarian Forum is Elmar Brok, MEP.

Honorary President: Otto Wolff von Amerongen †.

The main sponsors of the Forum are the Institute for European Politics in Berlin (coordinated by Dr Katrin Böttger) and the Hungarian Council of the European Movement in Budapest. The activities of the German-Hungarian Forum are supported by the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin.
