Germany, Sweden and Finland are deepening cooperation amid major geopolitical shifts. How can this partnership strengthen Europe’s security, unity and competitiveness? Join us to discuss Europe’s future with high-level representatives from all three countries.

Friday, 29 May, 11:00 AM - Friday, 29 May, 12:30 PM Add to calendar

The European Union is in the midst of one of the greatest transformations of European politics in a very long time. It is driven by Russia’s war in Ukraine, growing tensions between global powers, unrest in the Middle East and geoeconomic challenges. This has a profound impact on all European countries and calls for a discussion on Europe’s role in the world. How can Europe ensure security, resilience, and competitiveness in a rapidly changing geopolitical environment?

Under these circumstances, Germany, Sweden and Finland are deepening their partnership within the EU and NATO. They share key priorities: strengthening security and defence within the EU, as well as ensuring continued effective support for Ukraine. At the same time, the EU must secure its competitiveness, protect its democracies and enhance its capacity to act in the future. Negotiations on the next Multiannual Financial Framework must lay the groundwork for an efficient and competitive EU while preparing for a future EU enlargement.

At this crucial moment for European security and cooperation, we are pleased to welcome Michael Clauß, EU Advisor to Chancellor Merz, Christian Danielsson, State Secretary at the Swedish Prime Minister’s Office, and State Secretary Minna Kivimäki, Director General for EU Affairs at the Finnish Prime Minister’s Office. The discussion will look ahead: What are Germany’s, Sweden’s and Finland’s shared priorities? How can Europe remain a strong, united, and value-driven actor in a world marked by uncertainty? How can we ensure European security and cohesion in times of growing external and internal pressure? And how do we enhance the Union’s competitiveness and resilience?

The event is organised by the Swedish Embassy in Berlin and Institut für Europäische Politik and kindly supported by the Federal Foreign Office. The event will be held in English and follow the Chatham House Rule.
