Germany and the EU must counter protectionism and fragmentation in global trade. The German government should therefore push for EU-level rules-based free trade agreements, foster EU unity and uphold European standards to ensure competitiveness and open markets.

The global economy appears increasingly fragmented, marked by Trump's tariffs, China's aggressive trade policy, rising protectionism and the erosion of multilateral rules. Yet preserving rule-based global trade is central to the German and European economies.

In this issue of Berlin Perspectives, Claudia Schmucker analyses the importance of EU trade policy for Germany and vice-versa. She argues that the new German government should push ahead with the conclusion of further free trade agreements at EU level; strive for EU unity where member have differing views; and avoid a trade war with the US – without, however, abandoning European standards.
