Portugal elected a new parliament on 10 March. In his analysis for the EU Election Monitor, Alberto Cunha analyses the election results and highlights the European policy implications of possible coalition alliances.

Although it came third, the right-wing populist Chega ("Enough") party is considered the real winner in the Portuguese parliamentary elections on 10 March 2024. With 18 per cent of the vote, it recorded the best result ever for a third party - alongside Partido Socialista (PS) and Partido Social Democrata (PSD) - since Portugal's return to democracy after the Carnation Revolution in 1974. In view of the broad pro-EU consensus among voters and parties, the expected impact on Portuguese European policy is relatively small - apart from the fact that this is another strong result for right-wing populist parties in Europe.
