What does the EU’s enlargement toolkit entail? And which approaches are effective in the context of a changing geopolitical and security landscape in Europe? The first episode of the podcast “InvigoratEU Talks” explores these questions.

The changing geopolitical landscape in Europe since the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine demonstrates that EU enlargement and security policy must be tackled together. The podcast “InvigoratEU Talks” brings together scholars and policymakers from across Europe to examine current challenges and opportunities facing EU enlargement and neighborhood policy.

In the first of a total of six episodes, Funda Tekin (IEP Director), Vsevolod Chentsov (Ambassador of Ukraine to the EU), and Frank Schimmelfennig (Professor at ETH Zurich) discuss the tools the EU uses in its enlargement and neighborhood policies and geopolitical enlargement means. The discussion addresses how the EU’s approaches have changed in light of a new geopolitical and security landscape in Europe and where further reforms are needed to build a more resilient EU.

The upcoming episodes will cover various topics relevant to building a more resilient EU—from the influence of Russia, Turkey, and China in the candidate countries, to the promotion of democracy on the ground, to the social dimension of EU enlargement. The podcast is moderated by Mariam Khotenashvili (Executive Director of TEPSA).

The podcast is funded by the EU as part of the Horizon Europe project InvigoratEU.
