The people of Ukraine see their future in the European Union, as polls confirm. The granting of candidate status presented a strong sign of hope.
But how can accession negotiations look like in the face of ongoing Russian aggression? What opportunities does EU membership hold for Ukraine and for the EU itself? Why could Ukraine's integration into the European Single Market with its four basic freedoms (free movement of goods, persons, services and capital) be a sensible intermediate step towards full membership? Gerald Knaus is founder and chairman of the think tank European Stability Initiative, ESI. After studying in Oxford, Brussels and Bologna, he worked as a lecturer in Ukraine and for NGOs in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Bulgaria. His research interests include migration and refugees, the rule of law and EU enlargement. Furthermore, he is known for his SPIEGEL bestseller "Welche Grenzen brauchen wir?“ („Which borders do we need?“).
