The dissolution of the National Assembly by President Emmanuel Macron after the disastrous European elections for his party were followed by a French parliamentary election. The results have led to a historic and challenging situation in France. There is no clear majority and the possibilities for a coalition capable of forming a majority are very slim. France is facing the danger of a political deadlock and is on the verge of rediscovering the principles of the parliamentary system, while the history of the Fifth Republic is characterised by the strength of presidentialism.
