In the week from 16 to 19 July 2024, IEP, together with its partner organisation Cedos, selected a group of 12 Ukrainian think tankers from Kyiv and various regions, including Lviv, Mykolaiv, Pustomyty, Kremenchuk, Kopychyntsi and Zolotonosha, from almost 100 applicants and invited them to Berlin. The organisations they represent are active in the areas of youth work and political education/participation, documentation of war crimes, women's rights and sexualised violence as a means of war, veterans, IDPs, preservation of historical buildings and economic and financial policy. The aim of the Study Trip was for the participants to get to know the Berlin think tank landscape and gain insights into the working methods and priorities of various organisations related to Ukraine. They also had the opportunity to report on their work in Ukraine and to network with German colleagues.
During the three days, the participants were given a guided tour of the German Bundestag and met Stephan Bischoff, Senior Policy Advisor to Member of Bundestag Robin Wagener, Head of the German-Ukrainian Parliamentary Friendship Group. They visited the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP), the office of Berlin Economics and the pan-European think tank European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR). They also exchanged views with representatives from Vitsche, the Ukrainian embassy and the NGO Coopera. In two workshops, they were sensitised to the importance of intercultural communication and learned how to structure analytical publications and argue in a way that maximises their impact. Prof Dr Heiko Pleines from the University of Bremen presented the “Ukraine Analyses” and the “Discuss Data” platform for archiving, exchanging and discussing research data on Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus and Central Asia.
We would like to thank all participants and experts who took part in the Study Trip!
The Study Trip took place in cooperation with the Kyiv think tank Cedos and as part of the “UA Transformation Lab” project, whose activities are being carried out together with two other Ukrainian partners, the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation (DIF) and the New Europe Centre (NEC). The project is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.
