The third component of the Civic School for Sound EU Practice was successfully launched in Lviv on 23 November, 2015. Its beginning was marked with a conference on Ukraine’s EU association in general and its impacts for Western Ukraine in particular. The event was opened by Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany Ms Myroslava Dyakovych, who delivered sincere greetings from HE Ambassador Weil.

A comprehensive key note on the state of implementation of the Association Agreement was held by Mr Mykola Kuzio, First Deputy Director of the Government Office for European Integration. His informative speech was followed by a vivid panel discussion on the scope and effects of the EU Association for the Western border regions of Ukraine. Among the panelists were Ms Oksana Yurynets, Sub Committee Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Regional and Cross-Border Cooperation between Ukraine and the EU, Mr Mr Markiyan Malskyy, Director of the European Business Association, Mr Andriy Moskalenko, Director of the Mayor’s Administration in Lviv City Council, as well as Mr Lev Zakharchyshyn, Director of the International Department of Lviv Oblast Administration. The Panel was moderated by Mr Hennadiy Maksak, President of the Polissya Foundation for International and Regional Studies.

The conference was followed up by an intriguing workshop for members of Civil Society Organisations from Western Ukraine from 24-26 November, 2015. The seminar was implemented by Constanze Aka, Project Manager at Institut für Europäische Politik and was part of the workshop series “Civic School for Sound EU Practice” (CiSEP), a capacity building project for members of Civil Society Organizations in Ukraine. The project is organized by the IEP and implemented in cooperation with Civil Network OPORA (Lviv, Ukraine), the Odessa regional organization of All-Ukrainian NGO “Committee of Voters of Ukraine”, and Polissya Foundation for International and Regional Studies (Chernihiv, Ukraine). It takes place over a two-year period in the form of a progressively structured training program in the cities of Chernihiv, Odessa and Lviv. The training cycles convey comprehensive knowledge on constituent parts and effects of the Association Agreement, including the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area. Furthermore, participants study and practice approaches for sustainable monitoring of the association process. They are instructed in methods of strategy development, monitoring, campaigning, etc.

The trainings are led by experts from administrative bodies and civil society organizations in EU member and candidate countries. The long-term project creates a sustainable network and synergies for the cooperation of participating Civil Society Organizations.
