The completely revised second edition of the Handbuch on Germany’s European Policy was published on the occasion of the German Council Presidency at the end of 2020.

The reissue of the edited volume includes the latest development in Germany’s European policy and its influence on European Integration and decision-making processes.
Well-renowned authors offer a broad and analytical approach to basic principles and detailed concepts of German European policy, including domestic determining factors. Furthermore, they analyse selected internal and external EU policy areas in the context of German European policy.
An important innovation results from the change in perspective, which includes the perception of Germany’s EU policy in selected European partner states. In addition, the second edition is complemented by theoretical considerations of German European Policy.

The new edition of the Handbuch on Germany’s European Policy includes:

  • a foreword by Michael Roth, Member of Bundestag und Minister of State for Europe,
  • an introduction by the editors on the basic lines of German European policy,
  • fundamentals and concepts of German European policy,
  • domestic determinants and actors of German European policy,
  • Germany’s role in EU-internal policy areas such as migration and asylum, economic and monetary union, budget and finance, redistributive policies, social policy, energy and climate policy, etc.,
  • Germany’s role in EU-external policies such as trade relations, foreign, security and defence policy, EU enlargement and European neighbourhood policy, etc.,
  • German European policy: perceptions in selected partner countries,
  • Theoretical approaches to German European policy,
  • A comprehensive chronicle of German European policy from 1946 to the present.
