Young researchers from Eastern Europe and Eurasia receive support through fellowships to realise their research projects. The Eurasia Lab & Fellowship Programme also helps them network with other researchers and activists working on the region.

The Eurasia Lab & Fellowship Programme consists of a grant and a networking component: The IEP uses its expertise in and about the Eurasian region in order to create the Eurasia Lab as an even larger network of researchers, practitioners and activists working on the Eurasian region. This network in turn offers actors in the Eurasian region an important platform for the establishment of new contacts and interdisciplinary exchange.

In addition, the programme awards grants to outstanding young researchers from the Eurasian region so that they can advance their research projects and integrate themselves into the network. Three research teams were funded in the first phase of the programme. In addition to their own publications, the fellows have presented their research projects in the IEP podcast "Eurasia on the Move".

Background

IEP has a long-standing tradition of working with and on the Eurasia region. Through its programs EUCAIS (“The EU and Central Asia in the International System”) and EUCACIS (“The EU, Central Asia and the Caucasus in the International System”), IEP has been teaching and supporting masters as well as PhD students from the region. With the project SEnECA (“Strengthening and Energizing EU-Central Asia relations”) it has established a researcher and stakeholder network on EU-Central Asia relations. Over twenty years, IEP has also been supporting civil society actors in the Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries Armenia, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine and has well-established networks. IEP regularly works with the German Federal Foreign Office, the European External Action Service, regional embassies and like-minded think tanks and international organizations in various formats in Central Asia and the EaP countries.
