The 15th Deutsch-Französischer Dialog (Franco-German Dialogue) under the heading ‘Federal Europe? Solidarity – Subsidiarity – Democracy’ took place in Otzenhausen (Germany) on 16 and 17 May 2013. The Franco-German Dialogue is annually organized by the ASKO EUROPA-STIFTUNG and the Europäische Akademie Otzenhausen in cooperation with the Institut für Europäische Politik (IEP), the Centre international de formation européenne (CIFE) and other partners.[more]

On 6-8 March 2013 the Institut für Europäische Integration organized in cooperation with the Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung and the ASKO EUROPA-STIFTUNG an expert-workshop on „Europe and the USA – Strategic Partners for the Future?” in Wildbad Kreuth. Very well known experts from academia and the stakeholder community discussed the relevance of the transatlantic community with regard to the management of global problems, such as energy security and the Arab Spring. After the graduation of the first class of 25 students, the Institut für Europäische Politik (IEP) and the Centre international de formation européenne (CIFE) continue the master programme “Studies on the EU and Central Asia in the International System” in August 2013.[more]

Our current issue draws attention to the realigned French European policy under François Hollande. Another article focuses on the current crisis management in the EU, looking at forms of differentiated integration in particular. The current legislative procedure concerning European cohesion policy (2014-2020) represents a further key objective in the issue. Moreover, the fiscal federalism in Germany and the USA is compared to the EU. A review deals with the analysis of the ENP. The AEI reports on two conferences about EU Arctic policy and on a Europe being solidly united.[more]

The first annual meeting of the German-Portuguese Forum was held at the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon on 24 and 25 January 2013. Highlights of the forum, which was attended by approximately 300 participants, were represented by the speeches of the German and the Portuguese Foreign Ministers. These were followed by thematic panels and speeches of policy makers and experts, as inter alia the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Federal Minister of Finance, Steffen Kampeter, and the chairwoman of the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag, Petra Merkel.[more]

Katrin Böttger and Annette Knaut organize a panel dealing with „The European Citizens Initiative: Strengthening European Democracy?“ at the ECPR General Conference in Bordeaux in 2013. The panel will take place in the section „Organised for Influence: Organised Interests in National, European and International Arenas“ and will discuss methodological and theoretical challenges of this new instrument of participative democracy on the EU level as a type of agenda initiative. After a first meeting in October 2012, the study group on “The Value of Europe“ met for the second time on 13 December 2012 at the Institut für Europäische Politik. The expert group aims at taking stock of the value of Europe in an interdisciplinary study that features selected topics and policy areas such as the euro and the citizenship of the European Union. The first meeting focused on the conceptual design of the study, on questions of content and format as well as on the structure.
