First results of the IEP fact checking project “TruLies – The Truth about Lies on Europe” on the Topic of “Migration and Asylum” are online
The project “TruLies – The Truth about Lies on Europe” of the Institute for European Politics (IEP), in cooperation with Das Progressive Zentrum and supported by the Stiftung Mercator, presents first results. Six fact sheets on the topic of ‘migration and asylum’ analyse Eurosceptic and populist statements and subject them to a fact check on www.trulies-europe.de.
In line with the goal of a more objective debate on European politics in Germany, the fact sheets established in the project examine different Eurosceptic statements of German politicians. For this purpose, the statements, which often allude to diffuse prejudices and myths about the EU, are being put in context and subjected to a thorough fact check. The goal is to present the complex underlying issues in an understandable way and to uncover specific “truths” and “lies” contained in the arguments. Relevant data, references and additional literature complete the information offered. In this way, the fact sheets contribute to a systematic and analytically founded deconstruction of Eurosceptic and populist false assertions prejudices and animosities. Fact Sheets on the Topic of Migration and Asylum
Nr. 1 „Lastenteilung“: „Sobald es um die Verteilung von Lasten geht, ist es nur Deutschland, das immer bereitwillig Zugeständnisse macht.“ (Petry, AfD)
Nr. 2 „Grenzzaun“: „Deutschland braucht einen Grenzzaun.“ (Meuthen, AfD)
Nr. 3 „Abschotten“: „Abschotten, abschrecken, abschieben – das ist der menschenverachtende Dreiklang der EU-Flüchtlingspolitik.“ (Riexinger, DIE LINKE)
Nr. 4 „Asylmissbrauch“: „Das Asylrecht umzudeuten und daraus ein europaweites Ansiedelungsprogramm zu machen, geht in die völlig falsche Richtung. Es höhlt das Asylrecht aus und läuft dessen Kerngedanken zuwider.“ (Gauland, AfD).
Nr. 5 „Konzeptionslosigkeit“: „Die Flüchtlingskrise legt die Konzeptionslosigkeit und Inkompetenz der Bundesregierung und Europas offen.“ (Weidel, AfD)
Nr. 6 „1:1‑Mechanismus“: „Ich bin skeptisch, ob dieser Eins-zu-eins-Austausch sinnvoll ist, denn eins zu eins, also der Austausch legaler und illegaler Migration und Zuwanderung, bedeutet ja nicht ein Weniger an Zuwanderung.“ (Söder, CSU).
