Federal Congress of the Europa Union Deutschland
Prof. Dr. Mathias Jopp represented the Institut für Europäische Politik (IEP) at the 60th Federal Congress of the Europa Union Deutschland (EUD), which took place in Memmingen on 25/26 April 2015. He discussed together with Ambassador (retired) Dietrich von Kyaw the current status and perspectives on the Common Security and Defense Policy. Christian Moos, General Secretary of EUD, chaired the panel.
The discussion focused on the EU policy towards Russia and the reform of the Eastern Partnership as well as the security situation in the Middle East and North Africa, notably the menace posed by the terrorist organisation ‘Islamic State’. In light of these current challenges to European security, necessary reforms within the European Union were discussed. While there was consensus that the European foreign policy and the member states’ defense capabilities have to be integrated further, the question of whether a European army is necessary or not provoked a lively debate among the conference participants.
IEP was also represented by a stand at the “Markt der Möglichkeiten” (a small NGO fair) in the foyer of the conference center. It displayed the work of IEP and in particular its publications.
