Conference “Nationalisms in the Post-soviet Space: Logics, Ethics, Practices”
In the context of the research project “Ukrainians in Poland and Germany – Civic and Political Engagement, Expectations and Courses of Actions” Julian Plottka and Richard Steinberg presented a paper on “Awakening National Identity Abroad? The Case of the Ukrainian Diaspora in Germany” (Patalong/Plottka/Steinberg) in Moscow. The conference took place at the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA) and was organised by the Centre d’Études Franco-Russe de Moscou, the Gefter Online Magazine and the Yegor Gaidar Foundation. In a lively and interdisciplinary debate with participants from Europe and other continents the research findings were discussed focusing on a possible awakening of a Ukrainian national identity in the diasporic communities in Germany and Poland triggered by the events of Euromaidan in 2013. The paper presented theoretical questions concerning the nature of this new “national identity” and empirical findings on the identity building process of Ukrainians living in Germany. In this regard, the paper emphasized the role of social media, Russia as the “other” and European values.
The program of the conference is online available. A publication of the paper is planned in 2017.
