Call for Applications: GURN Study Trip to Kyiv

The Institut für Europäische Politik (IEP, Berlin) is pleased to announce the call for applications for participation in the study trip

“Ukraine’s new president and parliament: post-election tendencies, policy priorities, and the civil society perspective”

which takes place from 9 December – 14 December 2019 in Kyiv, Ukraine, within the project “German Ukrainian Researchers Network” (GURN). The study trip is organized in close cooperation with the New Europe Center (NEC, Kyiv).

The super election year 2019 in Ukraine brought new power constellations and a lot of fresh faces into office. With 73% of the votes, president Volodymyr Zelenskyy gained the trust of the population and is supported by a strong parliamentary majority. This provides an extraordinary strong mandate for Zelenskyy to deliver on his campaign promises of economic growth, stability and peace. However, the last polls showed the decrease of the support for the Ukrainian president and government and parts of the civil society remain skeptical of their first political steps.

This study trip aims at providing first-hand insights into what has been going on in in the domestic, security and foreign policy of the new presidency and parliament and at following these questions:

The participants will meet and exchange with experts from Ukrainian key think tanks/civil society organizations and political stakeholders and will have the chance discuss the most recent socio-political developments and the outlook for Ukraine in the following years (i.e.: domestic and international affairs of Ukraine, security and defense policy, decentralization, the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, as well as social policies or the humanitarian situation in Ukraine).

Who can apply?

The IEP would like to invite junior researchers (up to 35 years of age) who fulfill the following attributes:

✓ a profound (research) interest in Ukraine and/or Eastern Partnership Countries;
✓ institutional linkage with a German research institution, think tank and/or university;
